Question About Backing Up Files on Blank Media?

Posted on April 20th, 2011 by admin in blank media | 3 Comments »

Hi everyone

I’m just wondering what is the best type of blank media to use to back up files? I want like blank dvd’s that have the largest capacity. Also, would it be possible to back up files on a blank blu-ray disc? Because I think that they have the largest capacity, but I just need to know if I could use it to back up files?

Thank you

This is actually something I am fairly passionate about. Anything worth backing up is something that is worth paying to ensure is backed up.

I use Amazon Simple Storage Solutions (S3). The product page can be found here: http://aws.amazon.com/s3/

Its basically archived redundantly on Amazon’s data centers. They are extremely reliable and extremely cheap. Its like a pay as you go phone; you only pay for what you use. I am backing up almost 100GB’s of data a month and I am only charged like $15 a month. Thats $15 I am more than willing to spend for the peace of mind associated with it.

While they do have a web-based panel you can use, I always find it better to use programs that run natively on your computer. The one I use is called Super Flexible File Synchronizer. It can be found here: http://www.superflexible.com/

It does have a one-time licensing fee, but I assure you it is worth it. Its not that much (very reasonable) and it id absolutely awesome. I have even contacted support about making sure I configured it right and they were more than willing to help. It runs completely silent in the background and uploads everything automatically. You will eventually forget it is even there (until something happens, of course).

If you really cannot afford the licensing for the software (though it is very fairly priced at $59 for the Professional version – the only version that supports Amazon S3), there are free, less automatic options. Cloudberry Labs has released something worth looking into. It can be found here: http://cloudberrylab.com/?page=cloudberry-explorer-amazon-s3

Other fairly good options exist. Just Google search it ( http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Amazon+S3+software ). The first link is pretty good.

Backing up to anything in the same location as your computer is too risky. Most data is lost through fires, floods, peoples feet, and so on. If you backup online, your house could burn down (knock on wood times a thousand) and your files would still be safe.

Best of luck!

How hard/expensive is it to get Super 8 movie camera film converted to dvd/digital media?

Posted on April 18th, 2011 by admin in dvd media | 4 Comments »

I am currently looking to buy a super 8 movie camera, but before I do would like to know how much it would cost to get the film developed to dvd or other digital formats?

I’ve gotten very good results by doing it myself. Project it on a screen and record it with a good camcorder. I have then edited them, added sound effects, visual effects, captions, etc.

Wioth the low cost of camcorders today, it might turn out to be cheaper.

DVD Media: Does Hollywood use -R or +R DVDs? Which type is most likely to play best in most DVD players?

Posted on April 11th, 2011 by admin in dvd media | 3 Comments »

I need to burn 50+ DVDs for a dance recital.

Which type of DVD media should I buy? -R or +R?

What type does Hollywood use for it’s movies?

-R is the most compatible. -R and +R are recordable formats designed for people to burn their own DVD’s. The format for read only DVD’s created by the studios is a different format. DVD-RG I believe, which is not available to the general public – those are stamped, not burned like your dvd burner at home.

What happened to Windows Media Center on XP Home edition?

Posted on April 9th, 2011 by admin in windows media | 1 Comment »

One day I installed a Windows update, and for some reason, I can’t find Windows Media Center anymore. I tried to find it, but Microsoft’s website tells me that I have to upgrade to Windows 7 to be able to use it.

I looked around for it but I can’t find it. I know it exists because my dad’s computer has it, and he’s running XP Home edition.

Can anyone explain where it went? And where I could find it?

Thanks.

Check the control panel, Add/Remove programs, and see if there is a ADD Remove Windows components. If so, click on it and see if Media Center is in there.

If not, maybe you can download a copy from the internet and install it.

How do I get windows media player in windows 7 to play music properly?

Posted on April 6th, 2011 by admin in windows media | 1 Comment »

Ok, so I’m trying to listen to some music through Windows Media Player in the newly installed Windows 7 OS. Yesterday it worked fine, but today it plays about 5 seconds of music then stops for about 10 seconds before playing another 5 second snippet so on & so on.
Has anyone else out there had this problem?
If so how did you fix it?

Windows Media Player reports your music to Microsoft, who might have detected it’s pirated or something.

Use the free VLC instead, or use iTunes.
