Does 16x blank DVD media turn out bad alot?
I know the 16x media burns faster but does does the backup come out bad often?
It depends on what disc brand you are using and your hardware. If it’s name-brand stuff, then the data will probably be safe for years if burned properly and stored appropriately.
Overall, I would recommend to burn slower and to check for read errors after you burn. You can either do this through your burning program or with some you can find online.
Of all the DVD media that is around, Taiyo Yuden is the best.

It’ll burn faster if you’re using a 16x to 20x DVD burners,
Just stay away from Great Quality DVD-R and DVD+R’s,
I bought 2 100 spindle packs and I had to return 1 back. The other one was trashed since i used more than 30 and came up with only 12 good ones. I’ve switched over to Memorex, and I do get one or two that are bad every once in a blue moon.
I burn the DVD’s using the speed setting to maximum without any problems using 20x SATA DVD burners.

The rule of thumb is that the slower you burn the better the quality. Of course you have to take into consideration the brand of DVD your using (meaning the price you pay, most probably :p)
