Noam Chomsky on Media, Violence, Freedom of Speech, and Republicans (1993 – Part 5)

Posted on July 4th, 2010 by admin in media effects | 2 Comments »

December 10, 1993 http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FNoam-Chomsky%2Fe%2FB000AP81EC%3Fqid%3D1278217605%26sr%3D1-2-ent&tag=doc06-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325

Research into the media and violence attempts to determine whether a link between consuming media violence and subsequent aggressive and violent behavior exists. Although some social scientists support this link, methodological and theoretical problems with the existing literature limit interpretation of findings in this area. There is concern among some scholars that media researchers may have exaggerated effects (Ferguson & Kilburn, 2009; Freedman, 2002; Pinker 2002; Savage, 2004). For example, a 2008 editorial in medical journal the Lancet concluded that discussions of media violence effects were exaggerted. There are many explanations of aggressive behavior which do not emphasize the role of the media. For example, some researchers have suggested that the pathway to aggression is largely biological/genetic (see the work of Hare, 1993, Larsson, Andershed, & Lichtenstein, in Press, among others), while others have suggested that aggression can be explained by principles of evolutionary psychology.

Complaints about the possible deleterious effects of mass media are nothing new. Plato complained about the effects of plays on youth. Various media/genres, including dime novels, comic books, jazz, rock and roll, role playing/computer games and many others have attracted speculation that consumers of such media may become more aggressive, rebellious or immoral. This has led some scholars to conclude statements made by some researchers merely fit into a cycle of media-based moral panics (e.g. Gauntlett, 1995; Trend, 2007; Kutner & Olson, 2008). The advent of television prompted research into the effects of this new medium in the 1960s. Much of research has been guided by social learning theory developed by Albert Bandura. Social learning theory suggests that one way in which human beings learn is by the process of modeling.

Reagan opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Reagan gave a States’ Rights speech at the Neshoba County Fair in Philadelphia, Mississippi, the town where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964, when running for president in 1980 (many politicians had spoken at that annual Fair, however). Reagan was offended that some accused him of racism. In 1980 Reagan said the Voting Rights Act was “humiliating to the South”, although he later supported extending the Act. He opposed Fair Housing legislation in California (the Rumford Fair Housing Act), but in 1988 signed a law expanding the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Reagan was unsuccessful in trying to veto another civil rights bill in March of the same year. At first Reagan opposed the Martin Luther King holiday, and signed it only after an overwhelming veto-proof majority (338 to 90 in the House of Representatives and 78 to 22 in the Senate) voted in favor of it. Congress overrode Reagan’s veto of the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1988. Reagan said the Restoration Act would impose too many regulations on churches, the private sector and state and local governments.

Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr. (February 11, 1921 – May 23, 2006) was a four-term United States senator (1971 until 1993) from Texas and the Democratic Party nominee for Vice President in 1988 on the Michael Dukakis ticket. He also served in the House of Representatives from 1949 to 1955. In his later political life, he was Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the U.S. Treasury Secretary during the early years of the Clinton administration.

Media and culture: Sociology assignment

Posted on June 16th, 2010 by admin in media effects | 25 Comments »

This video was made by me for a sociology media and culture class to show how much impact the media can have on women of our society. Some may think that it is hypocritical to post something of this nature when I myself am a model; however, I am a voice from within the fashion industry who is trying to make a difference. I have felt so much pressure in my career as a model to be overly thin. I feel that the constant images we are exposed to time and again can play a negative impact on the way that we feel about ourselves. Some cities in Europe, including Milan have banned overly thin models from the runway.

“Madrid Fashion Week, the Pasarela Cibeles, announced last week that it was banning models with a body mass index, or height-to-weight ratio, of less than 18 – which a 5-foot, 9-inch model would have at about 125 pounds. Also, the mayor of Milan, Letizia Moratti, said she would call on her city’s designers to take similar action”( n.a 2006).

This is an excellent start. The more that we speak out the better chance that we have to change this issue. I am happy to say that at this time I am no longer worrying about my weight as a model. I have decided to freelance and to not work through an agency unless they have agreed to take me for my weight at the present time. Most agencies won’t take me at this time because of my weight, or they will agree to sign me if I lose weight. Keep in mind that I am 120 pounds at 5′9 which is already less than I should weigh based on the BMI (body mass index). Through genetics however, I have a tendency to stay on the thin side and always have. If I am already under weight based on my height and age how does anybody have the right to tell me to lose weight? This should be illegal! Modeling has always been a dream of mine, but I am not willing to kill myself to be in this industry.

“After a controversy in the modeling world over body weight, a second model has died after becoming dangerously thin. Ana Carolina Reston, a well-known Brazilian model who worked for Giorgio Armani, died this week at the age of 23. Reston was 5 feet 8 inches tall and starved herself down to 88 pounds during her battle with anorexia. The model ate only tomatoes and apples at the end of her life. Reston had to be hospitalized because of a generalized infection. She had been a model since 13 and worked worldwide” (n.a, 1996 para. 2).

The constant pressure is not only felt by models within the industry it is also felt by every girl who scans through the pictures of her favorite magazine. it is felt by turning on the television or playing on the computer.
These consistent images can bring girls to starve themselves, use drugs to maintain their skeleton type figures, and in several instances may even result in death. Because of these horrible circumstances I have decided to start a petition and send it to our governmental leaders so that we can also make this change in our country. It is important to be healthy; we live in a demanding society that requires us to be able to take on so many daily challenges. I don’t believe it is fair that everywhere we look we see a stick thin girl (usually 14, 15 or 16 years old) who makes us feel like we can’t even wear a bathing suit to the beach. We need to get realistic here and speak out as an entire team of Canadian citizens. Please take the time to review this short video and please sign the petition that I have created. I am going to print the petition and write to the leaders of our country, which will hopefully help stop some of the unrealistic standards we are exposed to in our daily lives, and perhaps, like Milan and Madrid, we can create a ban on unhealthy Canadian models as well. Thank you for your interest!

Change Background of Windows Media Player 12 (Windows 7)

Just for cosmetic reasons! Please do not mess around with your registry, you may harm your PC. There are 6 backgrounds, 1, 4 and 5 look the best in my opinion, 2 and 3, have got a ‘FPO’ logo. Don’t know what it is? If you like Windows Media Player 12, (which I do, it’s my default media player,) then this is great, Windows Media Player 12 is better than 11, and is now kind of turning a bit iTunes(ish).
