Aardman Animation, On Probation Steve’s Brother, classic DVD
This was me back in 1981, I was 17 and in a youth hostel in Filton Bristol, and this bunch of animation amateurs called Aardman Animation came to our hostel and recorded one of our meetings! — I don’t think we can call them a bunch of amateurs now, all I wanted to do was see my brother down in the courts sells before he got sent down, which I did and I ended up having the whole day off anyway and getting up, and at to explain myself in the next meeting lol, I was a little peed off that they didn’t include my name in the credits, I was the main character but they did give us £250 for the hostel which they spent on a camping trip for us – however this is my chance, my name is Steve Powell and I am the kiddie with the yellow hair and red shirt and brown jacket, I don’t really look like that lol.
Think you can still buy this DVD! Its called Aardman Classics DVD/VHS, or ebay is a good place to get it,
Now I’m a good boy with wife two kids living in Cornwall having an easy life.
Update: if there is anyone that was in the new careers hostel at the same time as me it would be cool to hear from you, think that the hostel is being used for something different now? and I’m not interested in those sort of people, if you know what I mean?

Interesting story …
Interesting story Steve,I worked for em for a bit when they were making “Rex the Runt” in the late 90’s. I prefered their early stuff before it all got commercial(W/G etc).
If you like this genre of Animation then you should check out “the bollex brothers”. They’re another Animation company located near the Aardman studios. Their work is lot darker, good examples can be seen with Radiohead’s “There There” video and also a stop motion film called “the secret misadventures of tom thumb”.

Ha! I first saw this one when the Aardman Classics DVD came out years ago (though I had to order it from the states anyway since sure’s this wouldn’t get released here anyway). I often wonder where they did get the audio for these “Conversation Pieces” and didn’t expect anything to come out of their inital airings this way (I find it amusing how topical some like “Early Bird” and “Late Edition” can be 25 years down the road).
